Northumbrian Water CAP Program - RES Environmental

The program of work covered a variety of geographical areas throughout Northumbrian Waters region. 5 NWG DAP’s were undertaken ranging for Middlesbrough, Redcar, Darlington, Billingham and Thornfield.

The objective of the project was to identify and review the most up to date model for the area. This model was then run with a variety for storm return periods to identify flooding hotspots within the catchments. Once identified a hierarchy of hotspots was decided based upon several factors; NWG reported flooding, NWG serviceability issues, Environment Agency Flood Risk Maps, pollution incidents and LLFA flooding amongst others. These prioritised areas were then subject to a more detailed model data review to increase confidence in the modelling outputs. This may result in additional targeted surveys which were reincorporated into the model.

Once the model has been updated a review of the flooding performance was undertaken using the DREAM2D software (RES developed software used by NWG as the benchmark for AMP 6 investment). Solutions for these prioritised areas were then developed looking at primarily at sustainable solutions utilising separation of targeted areas including highways and other major contributing areas, car parks schools that could be removed from the combined systems. Where surface water flooding had been identified more green infrastructure solutions were developed including attenuation basins. Suitable solutions where designed taking into account build-ability, including services, geotechnical, environmental and other known constraints as well as the flood risk benefit across a variety of return periods.

In order identify the benefit of the schemes the DREAM2D software was utilised to score the area pre and post solution. Identifying the flood risk movement of properties from the before and after scenarios.
